What Went Wrong With Coal's Biggest Player?

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) is the largest and most diversified publicly traded pure-play coal miner. Its first quarter loss of nearly $0.20 a share doesn't inspire confidence in the broader coal market's future. But the company's global footprint does provide a glimpse of what's going on throughout the industry.

Met coal's stranglehold
A year ago, Peabody lost $0.09 a share in the first quarter. Management had been calling for earnings to fall between $0.14 a share and a loss of a dime. They obviously missed their estimate, though some of that was from one-time items. The biggest detractor, however, was continued supply-driven pricing pressures in metallurgical coal.

(Source: CIA)

Peabody only mines met coal in Australia, where coal revenues fell around 17% in 2013 despite selling nearly 6% more tons of coal from the region. The big problem was an over 20% drop in revenues per ton, largely driven by the oversupply of met coal. The company's Aussie business hasn't improved, with revenues per ton down about 17% year over year in the just-ended quarter.

That pairs nicely with what's going on at domestic player Natural Resource Partners (NYSE: NRP  ) , which cut its dividend by 36% in early January because of continued weakness in the coal market. However, in an April presentation it gave an update on the market that helps to clarify where the problem lies. The thermal outlook was generally positive, but the first two bullet points on the met side were, "Prices at lowest level in several years" and, "Market is currently being overproduced." So the outlook for Peabody's Aussie operations through the rest of the year isn't great.

It's no wonder that Natural Resource Partners has been buying into non-coal assets in recent years. Those businesses accounted for around 30% of the top line in 2013, up from about 5% in 2005. And that number should get even larger this year as recent investments in natural gas assets should lead to a doubling of revenues from the relatively new gas segment.

Thermal goodness
The diversification effort should lead to a relatively solid first quarter for Natural Resource Partners -- especially since the company's outlook for thermal coal is actually pretty constructive. For example, management highlighted the cold winter, low utility inventories, an increase in natural gas prices, and foreign demand as positives. This suggests that the domestic thermal downturn might actually be nearing an end.

(Source: XTUV0010 via Wikimedia Commons)

In fact, during Peabody Energy's fourth quarter conference call, CEO Gregory Boyce noted, "PRB prices were up nearly 40% from their lows of last year." Based on Natural Resource Partners' April update on the thermal market, it's no surprise that U.S. thermal coal was actually a positive for Peabody, with a 10% jump in PRB shipments offsetting an overall 7% price decline in its U.S. business (the company also mines in the Illinois Basin).

The PRB accounted for almost 40% of revenues in 2013. Moreover, Peabody produced over 4.5 times as much coal from its PRB business as it did from its Australian met mines, its second largest operating segment. So, even a small price increase in the PRB will do a lot of good through the rest of the year. Keep an eye on this region and its impact on Peabody's business.

That's less true for Natural Resource Partners, which has relatively little exposure to the PRB. In fact, met coal is the partnership's largest revenue source at around 25% of the top line -- thus the dividend cut despite continuing diversification efforts and the signs of a nascent turnaround in the U.S. thermal coal market.

Listen to the words
At the end of the day, Peabody's update on the coal market is probably more important than its weak earnings result. The big news is that the PRB appears to be signaling a U.S. thermal coal rebound. That would be good for all of the domestic miners, particularly if it starts to spread to the other major coal basins. The other big news is that metallurgical coal is still struggling. That, unfortunately, means continued headwinds for Peabody and Natural Resource Partners.

Hudson Pacific Leases to Uber - Analyst Blog

Hudson Pacific Properties, Inc. (HPP) recently penned a new lease agreement with Uber Technologies, Inc. for an 88,134 square feet of space at its Class A office property, 1455 Market Street. The 10-year lease deal is slated to commence in first-quarter 2014.

As per the deal, Uber will occupy the entire fourth floor and backfills space of 1455 Market Streetbuilding. This space is occupied by property's largest tenant, whose lease term was scheduled to expire in 2017.

Spanning around 1.02 million square feet, this 1455 Market Street is a 22-story building and data center facility. The property is located on a 3.01-acre plot and already houses Square Inc., a leading electronic payment service provider. It is advantageously placed in the vibrant Civic Center / Van Ness submarket of San Francisco, which is one of the best technology and business hubs of the city. Moreover, it is close to the city's largest government and cultural firms such as City Hall, the Supreme Court of California and the corporate

The ideal location of 1455 Market Street makes it a desirable asset for firms catering to both national and local governmental agencies. The deal will help improve occupancy levels and boost rental revenue growth going forward.

Lately, Hudson Pacific has been inking lease deals to strengthen its tenant base. In May 2013, the company entered into a lease expansion and extension deal with NFL Media for 2 properties in South Calif., namely 10900 and 10950 Washington. The move enhanced Hudson Pacific's relationship with its existing media and entertainment tenants.

However, the demand for office space remains moderate amid a dismal environment with elevated unemployment levels and sufficient availability of space. This creates a pressure on rent and occupancies.

Hudson Pacific currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Sell). REITs that are performing better than Hudson Pacific include DCT Industrial Trust Inc. (DCT), Host Hotels & Resorts Inc. (HST) and CubeSmar! t (CUBE). All these stocks have a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

    2. Sigma-Aldrich (NASDAQ: SIAL  )
Maker of test tubes and beakers, Sigma-Aldrich has increased its dividend every year since 1976. Even though the company pays a relatively scrawny 1.1% dividend yield, its 21% payout ratio signals the company has ample opportunity to up its dividend for many years to come.

Any company that creates products and relies on other companies to use and distribute them will inevitably forge strong relationships with its customers. It's an important thing to look into when investing, yet easy to overlook. Investors should know whether customers are reliable, which are leaned on the most, and if the company they own is too dependent on any customer (or a select few). Bioprocessing product company Repligen (NASDAQ: RGEN  ) may make consumables that are the lifeline of the biotech industry, but its customer relationships are absolutely critical for smooth operations. Let's look at how the company interacts with the Life Sciences division of General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) , EMD Millipore from Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) , and Sigma-Aldrich (NASDAQ: SIAL  ) -- the three most important customers.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Sigma-Aldrich (NASDAQ: SIAL) is expected to report its Q3 earnings at $0.99 per share on revenue of $661.29 million.

CR Bard (NYSE: BCR) is projected to post its Q3 earnings at $1.40 per share on revenue of $739.62 million.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

At the beginning of April, the trade alarm for Sigma-Aldrich (SIAL) set off due to a larger seller coming together with the buyers to raise a posted offer. The phenomena pushed up stock face value, however unable to continue the previous trend. Hence, stock value has been on a decline since the month of March. Reasoning about the sources for the stagnation, will give potential investors important insight for a current or future investment. Given the nature of the firm, close attention should be paid to research and development. But, most importantly, to the business model as a whole and market environment. Looking at recent full year reports can also offer important information about specific performance indicators. In the middle, there is an important number of new positions consolidated by gurus through 2013, who would like to see new investors enter the business.

The merger between the two companies had been in the works since September, but hit many a bump on the road. The two major obstacles in the path were the Chinese regulations and the ongoing tax investigation regarding Nokia Indian plant, operating in Chennai. While China green-lighted the deal easily, the Indian authorities were less obliging. The end result is that the Indian facility was not a part of the acquisitions and will be retained by Nokia. Although Nokia has not announced any conclusive plans, the fact that it offered its 7500+ Indian workers early retirement scheme suggests that the plant may soon be shut down. Also, noticeably absent from the terms of the merger was the tate of the artSouth Korean plant in Masan. The deal closed for $7.5 billion. As previously decided, Nokia former CEO Stephen Elop will be reporting to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella and will be appointed executive vice president of Microsoft Devices Group. He will be overseeing the division that, from hence on, will be in charge of expanding the business of Lumia smartphones and tablets, Xbox hardware, Perceptive Pixel (PPI) products and accessories. According toAir Products and Chemicals (NYSE: APD  ) , while the use of nitrogen is about 15% more expensive than hydraulic fracturing, that difference is largely offset by an 11% increase in the estimated ultimate recovery of natural gas. Further, amid spreading drought conditions across much of the U.S., along with increasing requirements that drillers treat, recycle, and reuse flowback water, the use of nitrogen in fracking is surging.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 basic materials player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Gulf Resources (GURE), which manufactures and trades bromine and crude salt, and manufactures and sells chemical products used in oil and gas field exploration. This stock has been a favorite target of the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 140%.

If you take a look at the chart for Gulf Resources, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $1.10 to its recent high of $3.10 a share. During that uptrend, shares of GURE have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GURE within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in GURE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to its 52-week high at $3.10 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 467,986 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GURE will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $4.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GURE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support levels at $2.38 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $2.23 a share. One can also buy GURE off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    The real pain
The titanium dioxide business was the biggest drag for DuPont last year, as demand for the pigment, which is used primarily in paints, softened globally. This year has been encouraging so far, with most TiO2 producers witnessing an uptick in the demand for the pigment. While DuPont reported an 8% sequential rise in TiO2 sales volumes during its first quarter, Huntsman (NYSE: HUN  ) saw its first-quarter TiO2 volumes rise 27%sequentially. Furthermore, Huntsman scaled down production during the quarter to reduce inventory, and feelsthat a better balance between demand and supply should help the industry bounce back during the second half of the year.

    2. Rentech Nitrogen Partners

Rentech Nitrogen Partners (NYSE: RNF) is a variable distribution MLP that saw fertilizer margins decline in response to much higher natural gas prices than in 2012. As a result, by the third quarter the distribution was reduced to $0.27/unit, down from $0.50 in Q1 and $0.85 in Q2. The unit price for the year declined by 54 percent in 2013.

    3. EV Energy Partners

  • [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu

That being said, hedging remains inevitable. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry. And it's not just CF that believes so. Rentech Nitrogen (NYSE: RNF  ) , a smaller but pure-nitrogen player, has already locked in 43% of its full-year gas requirements at an average cost of $4 per MMBtu. Rentech paid $3.98 per MMBtu of gas this past quarter. As for CF, it has hedged 90% of requirements through July. So investors shouldn't panic if gas prices rise.

Brent Remains Lower On Oversupply Expectations

Brent crude oil fell to a new four month low after forecasts for increasing supplies were released on Tuesday. Brent crude oil traded at $105.95 at 5:32 GMT on Wednesday ahead of reports from the American Petroleum Institute and the Energy Information Administration.

Reuters reported that forecasts for the reports show US crude stockpiles increasing by about 1.8 million barrels. The rising stockpiles indicate that the market is oversupplied, even with supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Moving forward, investors will be focused on US data for clues about the number one oil consuming nation's appetite as its recovery gains momentum. Payrolls data and GDP data are expected to paint a clearer picture of the US' economic health when they come out at the end of this week. However, strong data would also make a case for the US Federal Reserve to pull back on its $85 billion per month bond buying plan, which would in turn could pressure crude prices.

Brent found some support from geopolitical tension in the Middle East where flare-ups in both Libya and Egypt renewed concern of a supply interruption. In Libya, reports of heavy shooting in Tripoli highlighted the Libyan government's lack of control over militia groups. The nation's oil supply has been cut to around 10 percent of capacity as protests and riots keep most of its largest oilfields shut.

Tension was also high in Egypt as former President Mohamed Mursi went on trial, where he could face a death sentence. The trial has reopened wounds for his supporters and sparked a fresh round of protests.

Will Cans Bring Wine Out of the Cellar?

Sacre bleu! If cans are the salvation of craft beer, are they good enough for wine, too?

It's actually been a long time since the fermented grape drink was solely the product of a corked glass bottle, as the industry was set on its head by the introduction of the twist-off cap, while wine-in-a-box eliminated the bottle altogether. Although canned wines have been around for about a decade, you probably won't find too many sommeliers sipping vino from a can, but it may help spur more sales by allowing consumers to take wine to more places than it's currently allowed.

That was one of the primary motivators behind Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) finally serving its flagship Samuel Adams brand in a can. Because public places like beaches and ballparks prohibit bringing glass bottles to the venue, it was limiting sales -- though there was likely a lot more than that behind falling sales of its premier brand. And the brewer doesn't really think it will have many new drinkers bellying up to the bar for its beer, but rather the can gives its current brew lovers (count me among them) more opportunities to enjoy their beer.

Craft beers in general have been more than willing to, er, bottle their brews in cans without loss of taste, but there's been a much longer history of beer in a can, so the hurdle wasn't as high, even among beer snobs. Vintners, on the other hand, have a much taller barrier to surmount, though boxed wine has probably knocked it down a peg or two.

According to a recent BusinessWeek article, boxed-wine maker Franzia is the world's best-selling brand, though it has a less than 1% share of the market globally (but 6.5% in North America).

Yet wine producers are facing some significant challenges these days. Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ  ) , the largest wine producer in the world and the biggest premium wine producer in the U.S. with more than $1.7 billion in annual sales, is only expecting growth to match the rise in the overall industry of the mid-single digits. It's actually looking for the Modelo beer business that it acquired from Anheuser-Busch InBev to drive its growth in the future.

Part of the problem is the changing tastes of consumers. In addition to craft beer's popularity, hard ciders and teas are gaining popularity, too. Boston Beer saw depletions grow 16% last quarter primarily because of the emphasis it placed on its Angry Orchard cider and Twisted Teas, and Bud recently introduced its Stella Artois Cidre brand. Last year, both SABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) acquired cider maker Crispin through their MillerCoors joint venture.

The brewers don't have much fear of diluting beer sales, though, because cider is seen as an alternative to wine, not beer. But innovative packaging such as canned wine may also allow wine producers to maintain, if not gain, drinkers. Spirit Airlines, for example, recently announced it was going to start serving wine in cans along with the little nips bottles it currently offers.

Wine has enjoyed some heady growth in recent years, and even in the Great White North, its market share has jumped from 24% to 31% between 2002 and 2012. So if vintners can get wine onto beaches and ballparks just as the brewers hope, they may yet have something to pop their corks over.

There hasn been a January effect rally in shares of Ply Gem (PGEM). In fact, it has been quite the opposite. Shares are down a whopping 25% during the month. For a stock I rated as on of the Top 10 Sizzling Stocks, such a move is painful, but not disastrous. Sizzling Stocks are meant to be held for the duration of the year and we have 11 months to go. Small-cap stocks like Ply Gem can move sharply one direction or the other.

Through Tuesday, siding manufacturer Ply Gem Holdings Inc.(PGEM) shares were down 39% from the offer price in its $381 May debut. Deutsche Bank’s Vishal Shah and team consider the impact on Chicago Bridge & Iron, as well as Fluor (FLR), who had a competing bid:

While the award of Cameron LNG is clearly a positive for [Chicago Bridge & Iron], we believe this project could provide upside of $1.6B to our current new award estimate of $13.6B for 2014. Additionally, this project win further supports[Chicago Bridge & Iron] as a leader in [liquefied natural gas] projects. The company is currently in the running for Golden Pass LNG ($10B), Anadarko Mozambique LNG ($15B, competing against FLR) and Russia Far East LNG ($15B), all of which will likely be awarded in 2015. As for [Fluor], our probability-weighted new award estimate for Cameron was $1.4B, which suggests that 2014 new awards could be $24.6B, vs. our current estimate of $26.0B.

There have been some good (read: bad) predictions over the years.

Before the 2013 forum, DealBook's Andrew Ross Sorkin recalled that in 2003 the serial Davos attendee, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, said of Google: "These Google guys (co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin), they want to be billionaires and rock stars and go to conferences and all that. Let us see if they still want to run the business in two to three years."

Top Construction Companies To Buy For 2015: Assa Abloy AB (ASAZY.PK)

Assa Abloy AB is a Sweden-based company engaged in the secure door opening solutions. It is organized into five divisions: Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), North and South America (Americas), Asia, Australia and New Zealand (Asia Pacific), Global Technologies and Entrance Systems. The EMEA, Americas and Asia Pacific divisions manufacture mechanical and electromechanical locks, security doors and hardware in their respective geographical markets. The Global Technologies division operates in the product areas of access control systems, secure card issuance, identification technology and hotel locks. The Entrance Systems division is a supplier of entrance automation products and services. The Company subsidiaries include ASSA Sverige AB, Timelox AB and ABLOY Holdings Ltd., among others. In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa remains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

Tesla's Cars Are On The Move In China, But For How Long?

Just like the media had reported, Elon Musk really was in China on Tuesday. He was on hand to deliver Tesla's first eight units of the Model S to Chinese customers. Additionally, Musk was also apologizing to some unhappy consumers for the delayed delivery of their cars.

But most importantly, Musk was here to see through what may be his biggest challenge in China: To ensure Tesla drivers will have access to an adequate supply of electricity through a network of charging stations. Otherwise, his Model S is at risk of becoming a  piece of artwork sitting in the parking lot. (Garage is not a familiar word for Chinese as high-rise is common.)

On WeChat – the main information source for scores of Chinese these days – the focus of discussion has switched from curiosity to skepticism–can the Model S actually survive on China's roads? The catalyst for the change in sentiment came from Musk himself during an interview he gave to CCTV News in which he discussed the lack of adequate charging stations.

Within 24 hours, the pundits were already detailing the complexities of China's power system and explaining why the task of building charging stations could turn out to be a major roadblock for Tesla going forward.

In order to ensure everything goes well, Tesla will have to overcome three big hurdles: the transmission of electricity from the grid to the charging stations that are owned by different companies, the approval of multiple levels of government officials and the lethargy of the state-owned grid operators.

English: Tesla Model S sedan English: Tesla Model S sedan (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Easier said than done. And Tesla is not alone. Other Chinese carmakers that aspired to churn out electric vehicles that are even more friendly to the environment also ran into these very same issues. A case in point would be BYD BYD – Warren Buffet's pick. Even with the advantage of local knowledge, none of the domestic players have come up with a solution for these problems.

The key supplier of electricity to the charging units would likely be a company called NARI Group Corporation, a subsidiary of the State Grid and Sinopec, one of the oil giants, while the stations themselves would belong to a Beijing-based power generation company called Hanergy. In other words, Tesla will have to convince NARI, Sinopec and Hanergy to cooperate in finding a solution for Tesla's fuel problem. Moreover, the state-owned power grids may not be up to the task of producing the needed electricity to the network and require further investment and development.

Assuming that Musk could seal multiple deals with his various Chinese partners for the charging stations, he'll also need to win the support of countless government officials at the city, county and provincial levels. Tesla needs to convince the government at all tiers to facilitate the construction of charging stations in each of their territories he hopes to sell his cars.

Musk, in fact, is also busy trying to develop solar energy as another source of electricity, but then a new problem arises – a high cost would become a key concern.

Housing Starts Unexpectedly Fall in June

Make no mistake about it, the housing recovery is under way. But that doesn't mean it's going to be a smooth ride.

The Commerce Department announced this morning that privately owned housing starts fell last month by 9.9% compared to May. The brunt of the damage was felt in the multifamily sector, which experienced a 26.7% sequential decline. Single-family housing starts fell by a comparatively modest 0.8%.

"As construction ramps up, we're bound to have some hiccups along the way," a market strategist told Bloomberg News. "I don't think this one data point is immediately concerning. The housing markets are going to be a driver of economic growth."

There were nevertheless two positive takeaways from the most recent round of data. First, permits for single-family construction projects increased in June by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 624,000. This is a leading indicator of housing starts, as permits are a necessary predicate to the actual construction project.

And second, as you can see in the chart below, June marked the 21st consecutive month of year-over-year improvements in single-family housing starts, growing at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 61,000 over the same month last year. While the 591,000 starts in June remain roughly half of where they would be in an otherwise healthy economy, things are nevertheless headed in the right direction.

The latter developments have been confirmed by the earnings reports of the nation's largest private homebuilders. As I noted yesterday, Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL  ) , the nation's largest luxury homebuilder, said that its unit deliveries in the second quarter were up by 33%, while Lennar (NYSE: LEN  ) , the third largest builder by units, reported a 39% improvement.

And the same is true at the nation's two largest homebuilders by units delivered. D.R Horton's (NYSE: DHI  ) deliveries shot up by 33% in the most recent quarter over the same three-month period last year, and PulteGroup's (NYSE: PHM  ) were up by 23%.
